چکیده

This paper investigates the effects of contrastive focal accent placement on lingual articulation and coarticulation of French [kskl] clusters in word-medial position. The EPG results show that (i) this type of accent does not systematically increase the amplitude, but the duration of linguopalatal constrictions (particularly their release); (ii) i t directly lengthens the temporal interval between the articulatory hold phases of two contiguous consonants; (iii) no matter what the accent position is, it can affect the whole cluster; (iv) the gestural co-ordination of biconsonant sequences seemed to vary with the focal accent more according to articulatory than syllable boundary rhytmic constraints.

Audiovisual production and perception of contrastive focus in French: a multispeaker study

This study examines the visual cues to prosodic contrastive focus in Hexagonal French and their role in visual speech perception. Two audiovisual corpora were recorded (from two male native speakers of French) consisting of sentences with a subject-verb-object (SVO) syntactic structure. Four conditions were studied: focus on each phrase (S,V,O) and broad focus. The corpora were first acoustical...

A multi-level approach to focus, phrasing and intonation in French

Much recent work on German and English intonation has addressed the impact of information structure on prosodic patterns in terms of the focus/background partition. In contrast with stress-accent languages such as Italian, Spanish or English, French does not appear to signal focus through pitch accent assignment, rather it appears to mainly exploit prosodic edge marking for the same purposes. T...

Does deletion of French SCHWA lead to neutralization of lexical distinctions?

This study explores the hypothesis that the invariant properties characterizing lexical items include non contrastive phonetic details such as the amount of linguopalatal contact, or aspects of inter-gestural timing. We show that, in French, a sequence of consonants resulting from the loss of schwa maintains some of the fine articulatory characteristics of the lexical form containing schwa. Suc...

Coarticulation and contrast: Neighborhood density conditioned phonetic variation in French

Phonological neighborhood density (ND) conditions variation in a number of acoustic phonetic properties of words. For example, previous research has shown greater hyperarticulation and greater nasal coarticulation in high-ND English words than in low-ND words. Here, we investigate the effects of ND on vowel hyperarticulation and vowel nasality (coarticulatory and contrastive) in French. Acousti...

A Quantitative Study of Focus Shift in Marathi

We study the effect of focus shift on prosodic features for Marathi, a major Indian language. In our analysis, we consider different focus locations and different focus widths. We report observations of fundamental frequency, intensity, and syllabic durations of constituent words of the utterance. F0 is studied via the accent commands of the Fujisaki model. We contrast statements containing nar...
